Research
Current Projects
WSU Irrigated Agriculture Research Extension Center
Agriculture is the major industry in Central Washington. In collaboration with WSU IAREC, SAGE students are helping develop tools to monitor orchards and allow farmers to make data-driven decisions for irrigation and stress mitigation. Students are also working on projects to improve soil in orchards.
US Department of Agriculture Wapato
Cherries are an important agricultural product for Washington State. In collaboration with the USDA Wapato Research Station, SAGE students are investigating how to protect cherries from X-disease, a viral pathogen that can halt fruit maturation and devastate orchards.
Yakama Nation Huckleberry Project
Huckleberries are an important First Food to the Yakama Nation. In collaboration with Yakama Nation Wildlife, SAGE students conduct field and lab work investigating the impact of invasive spotted wing drosophila (SWD) on huckleberries in Gifford Pinchot National Forest and the Yakama Nation Closed Areas.
Panama Indigenous Intercambio Program (PIIP)
PIIP is a two-week international research experience at the Batipa Field Institute (BFI). In collaboration with the Universidad Tecnológica Oteima and indigenous ecological experts, SAGE students will complete field projects and participate in a community service project in the Ngäbe Bugle comarca.
