Ethical Research

“Good research is ethical. Unethical research is never good.”

–Unknown

Ethical conduct of research is a vital skill for scientists

Learning the principles of ethical research is an essential skill for anyone on the pathway to a STEM career. Ethical practices protect the welfare of research subjects, the validity of scientific findings, and public trust in science.

Unethical research does harm

Unethical research has a variety of consequences. Conducting unethical research can result in being expelled from school or fired from work. In severe cases of research misconduct, jail time and fines are also possible. Unethical research practices can do real physical, psychological, and social harm to individuals and communities, especially among vulnerable populations. On a societal level, unethical research can lead to public mistrust in the institution of science and contribute to the rise of pseudoscientific beliefs.
